girl being attacked

"I'm not blaming the girl, but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you-don't take drinks from other people."
Serena Williams - commenting on the Steubenville, Ohio rape case.

As a man, I find people who make excuses for rape highly offensive. She dressed provocatively, she did this or did that, she was a slut...

It offends me because it implies that all men are potential criminals, just an excuse away from committing an act of violence against a woman. The idea that women need to be "protected" from the animal instincts of the males around them is the kind of thinking that leads some cultures to force woman into oppression by covering them up from head to toe.

Never, ever, ever is rape the victim's fault. No matter what the circumstances, no matter what the "provocation" – violence of any kind against a woman is totally unacceptable. The rapist knows, of course he knows, when sex is not consensual. Anything else is just a lie made up after the fact.

Parents, instead of teaching your girls to censor themselves by how they dress or how they act, teach your boys that forcing a girl to have non-consensual sex is a totally despicable act. It’s not something that happens at a party – it’s something that happens because the rapist has no respect for women and the sovereignty of their bodies.

Parents have some responsibility here; the rapist does not grow up in a vacuum. Boys who are raised to respect their sisters, wives and mothers are less likely to become rapists because they view the other person as a mirror image of themselves and empathize with them when they feel pain or distress.

I repeat: Never, ever, ever is rape the victim's fault. We must banish this way of thinking from our very soul, from every inch and corner of our society. Never, ever, ever should any man rape a woman and be excused. Never, ever, ever!
